Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's):

FAQ's
What conditions does Dr. Tushar Madke treat?
He specializes in liver diseases including liver cirrhosis, non‑alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), alcoholic liver disease, viral hepatitis (B, C), autoimmune liver disorders, hepatocellular carcinoma (liver cancer), portal hypertension, and liver failure. He also evaluates and manages patients for liver transplantation.
What is a hepatologist, and how is that different from a gastroenterologist?

A hepatologist is a doctor specialized in diagnosing and treating liver, biliary (bile duct), and related metabolic diseases. A gastroenterologist covers the broader digestive system (esophagus, stomach, intestines, pancreas, etc.). For complex liver conditions, a hepatologist is the specialist to consult.

Does Dr. Madke perform liver transplants himself?
While hepatologists typically do not perform the surgical transplant operation, Dr. Madke is involved in the transplant process—evaluating patients, coordinating with transplant surgeons, managing pre‑ and post‑transplant care, and monitoring immunosuppression, complications, and follow‑up.
How is cirrhosis managed, and can it be reversed?
Cirrhosis means scarring of the liver. While advanced cirrhosis is not fully reversible, its progression can often be slowed or halted by treating the underlying cause, abstaining from alcohol, managing complications (ascites, varices, encephalopathy), and regular monitoring. In select cases, transplant may be indicated.
What is non‑alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and how is it treated?
NAFLD is fat accumulation in the liver in people who drink little or no alcohol. Treatment focuses on lifestyle changes: weight loss, diet, controlling diabetes/insulin resistance, cholesterol, exercise. In advanced cases, medications or specialist care may be required.
What happens after a liver transplant?
Post‑transplant care includes lifelong immunosuppression (anti‑rejection medications), regular monitoring (blood tests, imaging), infection prevention, surveillance for complications, and lifestyle modifications. A hepatologist oversees and coordinates follow‑up care.
How often should patients with liver disease follow up?
It depends on severity and type. Some may need follow-up every 3–6 months; more advanced disease or post‑transplant patients may need monthly or more frequent visits. Imaging, labs, and endoscopy may also be scheduled periodically.
